Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
