Learning centers in northern Nigeria have often been targeted for armed groups

Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Community members informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.
